So I was a Raid Leader

It was 9:00 pm on a Saturday Night. A crowd of people logged in for the Guild Flex raid. But there was no sign of Navimie or the others who would usually start the raid.

At 9:10 I joke in guild chat that Luxypie or Ravzz should start the raid since they have seniority (they are Hunting Pack and I am Scouting Pack guild rank).

At 9:14 I invite Luxypie and Ravzz to group without asking first. The both accept my invitation. Promote them to assists.

At 9:15 I say in guild chat that anyone who wants to come to flex type '1' in guild chat or whisper me.

And already I had made two critical mistakes that I missed until much later:

Mistake 1: I assumed Luxypie wanted to come to the flex raid that night (she didn't), but Luxy being a nice helper went a long with my assumption instead of correcting me. I apologised afterwards, but I was oblivious at the time.

Mistake 2: Morzierz (an officer) was on an alt called Moztingo. The alt has a normal alt rank and not an officer rank. I didn't notice this fact and Moztingo was invited along with everyone else who whispered me or typed '1' in chat.

After inviting everyone we noticed a problem, of the twelve people wanting to go we only had one tank (Kahrax) and 2 heals (myself and Ravzz).

After waiting to 9:20 for a solution, I queued us for SSO Wing 1 Flex (instead of the usual started with SSO Wing 4 Flex). And I found myself leading a Guild Raid for the first time in eight years.

Leading a Flex raid is simpler than a normal raid. There is no loot to deal with and no DKP/EP is awarded. So it was smooth going. We one shot Immerseus & Protectors with Ravzz solo tanking. (At the start of Protectors I said "don't' throw the thing to the healers" and forgot to add "also don't throw the thing to the tank" as well. So Ravzz ended up getting a Mark of Anguish, oops.)

We stopped Wing 1 at 9:45 we stopped there since we knew Norushen required two tanks because of the Self Doubt stacks.

Luxypie asked a tank friend Tankazz/Shadowdk to join as a second tank (I was still obvious to my first mistake at this time), and someone asked their friend Jazzard joined as a third healer. I give the Navimie preamble about the Frostwolf raid is for fun and not drama and not to say anything mean to anyone in raid chat.

We also decided since we now had the numbers to just start on Wing 4. At 10:00 we had cleared to Blackfuse.

And we wiped. Since I had no idea how belts worked I was unable to explain it very well and Gunsnßowses who hadn't done belt before didn't know how to get off the belt. I blame myself for the failure to communicate anything useful to Gunns.

Haev and Luxy take over belt. We wipe again. This time I hadn't been telling people to kill the crawlermines! Brae has to leave the raid, as announced at the start, to take the son to a comic con. Souglyy and James joined on some alts at this time.

Third attempt, crawler mines are destroyed, the belt team is wonderful, the raid kills Blackfuse! It is now 10:30.

Next we clear trash and reach Paragons! Paragons was a one shot. We didn't know the kill order, so someone googled it. I dusted off my old /run SetRaidTarget("target", 8) macro to apply {skull} to the mobs as they were announced in Vent. Some of the Paragons have very similar sounding names, but I was accused of being racist towards Mantrid for saying this.

10:50, we head down 'Rough-Hewn Passage' to Garrosh. As we head down the death tunnel, I rearrange the groups for left side/right side split. We do wipe when we accidently get two packs at once, otherwise the tunnel was smooth.

As we reach the end of the tunnel Navimie logs in. Ravzz goes DPS and Navi joins as healer. Navi then fixed up the groups I made. It is 10:59 and we do our only attempt on Garrosh for the night. We reach the last phase of the Garrosh fight but we just didn't get him down.

11:14, Navimie calls a ready check to see who wants to continue, some people need to go to bed, so the raid ends.

So some observations on how I did.

Atain Command Style vs McTacky Cooperation Style:Playing as McTacky as the raid leader cooperative and friendly and getting feedback and not assuming it was someone else's problem. During this run I was announcing things like 'Shockwave, watch your feet' & 'Crawler Mines are up' & 'move out of the fire'. Whereas back in MC & ZG on Atain I'd be no-nonsense commanding people and tunnelled in on damage meters and not the mechanics of the fights. Back in the MC days it was more about wrangling the large crowd instead of being good on the technical aspects of the fights. On McTacky during the raid today I even said 'good hustle' after the group managed to deftly deal with a pack of adds we didn't expect.

Knowing the Fights:Honestly I had no business leading the raid into Wing 4 if I didn't know things like 'how the conveyor team works exactly' or 'what order do we kill the paragons in' or how may times to we swap colours before we don't go back to the centre in phase 2 of Garrosh'? It is all well and good to say things like 'stay out of the fire', but that simply meant I knew some of the mechanics, but not enough. Luckily I wasn't stupid enough to fake it though my ignorance, and I just flat out admitted I didn't know these things. The raid cooperated, we found the answers and we got though it.

Helpful Luxy:Luxy was way helpful, more than I realised during the raid. She got us the second tank, she saved us on conveyors, used a repair bot at Garrosh. All for a raid she didn't even want to go on! I don't want to trivialise the efforts of the rest of the raid, they all came together to get I though the four kills we did and compensated for my shortcomings in knowledge, but Luxy is way too helpful for her own good!

Self-deprecation humour:I did too much self-deprecation humour at my own expense during the raid. It ended up sounding like I was fishing for complements when I wasn't. Luckily I smarted up and eased up on it in the last hour.

Confidence:When we were killing stuff I was too confidence in myself. When we were wiping I had lost all confidence in myself. I needed to be in more of a middle ground. Wipes happen and clearing mobs happens, it isn't anything special and I probably wasn't the cause of either.

What should a Raid Leader Do and Not Do?During a run with no loot, no EP, and zero drama between people, what is a Raid Leader supposed to do? Explain the boss fights? I did that poorly. Keep the raid moral up and moving forward? I managed to do that. Analyse what went wrong and create a plan to deal with it? I managed to do that.

Ghostwolf Rank:
It was suggested during the run that the Shaman be given their own rank in the Frostwolf guild list (we had a lot of shaman in the run). Then it was suggested the rank be called Ghostwolf. I don't think we'll be moving any Shaman to this rank, but that rank name was brilliant! (the existing ranks in Frostwolves are wolf based - Alpha Wolf. Beta Wolf, Hunting Pack, Scouting Pack, Frostwolf, Pup, Sheep).

I probably missed some stuff, but I am glad I didn't post this right afterwards and instead reflected on what happened. I am proud of myself of getting the raid together and got it moving ahead despite the shortcomings, but it was my own shortcomings that held us back in the end. I got everyone else doing 100% and I wasn't giving it my own best. (I'm sure I wasn't healing to by potential because I was too busy seeing what everyone else was doing!).

This isn't a cry for complements or sympathy, I think I did okay. Most of this is just me figuring out where I can improve in case I raid lead again within the next 8 years.

Most of all I just hope everyone who came had fun, which is the most important thing!

Guild Drama?

I just can't complain enough about the Frostwolves!

I mean first of all they are always too friendly! They help me get mats for my Legendaries, they run old instances with my alts, get me hard raid achievements. They have to have a hidden agenda! No one is this kind and pleasant!

Then they take my low Heals Per Second into Flex raids and let me have loot. If they are foolish enough to let people like me raid, what are they really up to?

The lack of any drama ever is so suspicious. I'd say scandalous. Is there a coverup? Is it a conspiracy?

I don't have the answers, so I'll put up with these perfectly pleasant and delightful people for now and undercover the truth!

PS: I love you all!

Thanks Luxypie! That TARDIS cake looks great! Sorry I wasn't there!

Dath'Remar to Saurfang!

"Here Stands the Shrine of Dath'Remar, a fitting tribute to a noble elf. Let all who gaze on this monument remember his sacrifice against the Scourge and his dedication to the cause of our continued survival. All who prosper in Quel'Thalas do so thanks to him."

My guild Frostwolves just moved server from Dath'Remar to Saurfang. I thought we should have a group pic at the Shrine of Dath'Remar before we left.

Azadelta's Warcrimes

"Do you want some Cloth?" asked Azadelta.
"Sure," I said.
"Come to Wetlands..." said Azadelta.
So McTacky flys to Wetlands. What met his eyes was pure horror.

Both Dragonkin and Dragonmaw Clan alike were slaugtered by Felmagicks. Reinforcement came and came, but stood no chance against the Warlock.

Been a Month and a Half

It has been a Month and a Half since my last entry.

My hiatus began initially because of my minor cuts on my hands. This initial hiatus led me to realise that most of my content was about obtaining Achievement X. I had tried to make those posts informative by then explaining how I obtained that achievement. I'd mention my cool friends and some of their cool blogs. And only then in passing on how they helped me achieve an achievement.

My minor hiatus led me to realise I was just obtaining achievements every day to be able to post about them. I didn't have a healthy balance between blog and playing.

So I stopped posting all together.

Since Pandaria has been released, I've loved almost every moment. I have obtained many achievements and done many quests. Pet Battles are just so great! It is like the Pokémon MMO I've always wanted. Loved the two Pandarian Emissaries outside Brewfest giving the hint that they'll compete with the other breweries for Brewfest next year.

My next post? Well when I think up something to write I'll write it.
After Patch 4.0
Today

Note: Just noticed looking at the list, I just noticed that Exëcute left the guild. That makes me sad!

Guild Ranking Changes

Taken a moment before the shut down for 5.0.4

Taken after 5.0.4 and after the top 10 had logged in.
As you can see everyone's points have gone down. Edit: Oops, ignore that statement.

It also seems that the Guild list only lists achievements earnt by that Toon specifically (and some Meta earnt that way), not your account-wide total.

Total Values:

Frostwolves:
Navimie - 13540 (13560 -20!?)
Azadelta - 13125 (12595 +530)
Roshii - 12945 (12795 +150)
Souglyy - 12815 (12765 +50)
Mctacky - 12210 (12100 +110)
Ayelena - 11835 (11525 +310)
Sevros - 11795 (11430 +365)
Exëcute - 11445 (11295 +150)
Aioros - 11335 (11295 +40)
Faithless - 10755 (10595 +160)

Only Aza and Exë's spot changes, the rest stay the same. However Navi loses points with her grand total...Weird.

Toravon the Ice Watcher (25 player)

I was called Wintergrasp with  Navi by a whisper with the the newly free Warcraft Armory App. Three of us attacked the gates with tanks as Azadelta held off four players solo. Then we won!

Then it was time for Vault of the Ancients (25 Player). I went with Azadelta (Warlock), Roshii (Rogue) and Souglyy. None of us were tanks. Sougly, Roshii and Aza were dps. Switched to my Retribution spec to try to Ret Tank. Sougly switched to her  on Holy Pally Imwifhim to heal.

First Attempt: I tried to keep threat but the damage I was taking was too much and I was killed at 66%. Aza and Roshii tried all their cooldowns and agro resets but to no avail. Roshii however used Vanish on some of Toravon's trash so wasn't able to use it to reset agro.

Second Attempt: This time Souglyy and I both went heals. Aza and Roshii would then have to try their tricks to get this kill! I beaconed Aza, Soug beaconed Rosh. Then the battle was joined.

Aza had threat first and was using every trick he knew to avoid damage as Soug and I healed the clothie.

Roshii then took over threat as the heals shifted focus. At this point he was about at half health and all four of us was alive. I spent a lay of hands as did Soug. Then Roshii used his Vanish properly and Aza took over.

Down to 25% Aza hammered away keeping threat, but Aza was near death when Roshii had a second wind and grabbed threat back. This was it. We were out of tricks now. It was time to burn down Toravon!

It was down to the wire but we prevailed! Toravon was slain! Thanks for all the tremendous effort!

Ulduar 25! (part 3) + 12k Achievement Points

There I am, 5th Spot
Made it to 12,000 Achievement Points today. I got it during Ulduar 25 Player. Even got Glory of the Ulduar Raider (25 player) while in there!

Frostwolves:Myself and  Navimie both healing. DPS was Roshii (on Imwifher), Exray (on Àbaddon), Azadelta, Fallnapart and Xandra,

The Darkness Within: Dragonray (on Dragonelle), Farashkar, Mithraic

Other: Arvash from Shadow Rising on Drak'Tharon and Sausagê from Clarity on Frostmourn

I Choose You, Runemaster Molgeim (25 player) - When we attacked Assembly of Iron, we killed the little ones then big one firstly. Leaving Runemaster Molgeim for last.

Rubble and Roll (25 player) - During the Kologarn fight, we avoiding attacking the body at all and just killed the arms 5 times to spawn the adds. After that the body barely had any HP left.

We then killed the four Keepers of Ulduar as normal. Freya killed the 'lazy' way as Azadelta put it (Hard Mode). He said it was lazy because it meant we didn't have to kill her three Ancients.

Not-So-Friendly Fire (25 player) - Didn't manage to get this one during Mimiron. However we did get Firefighter (25 player) for those that needed it by killing Mimiron with hardmode.

I Love the Smell of Saronite in the Morning (25 player) - Killing General Vezax and the Saronite Animus only took one attempt. We let 6 Saronite Crystals spawn without hurting them. That caused Saronite Animus to appear. We killed Saronite Animus then took down General Vezax.

During Yogg-Saron, I got to take a portal. Now I am 2/3 of the way into In His House He Waits Dreaming (25 player)

Iron Dwarf, Medium Rare (25 player) - Arvash, Sausagê, Exray and Navimie stayed behind after Yogg-Saron to work on this one. It two enrages to get all 25 Dark Rune Guardian Dwarves to be killed by Razorscale. Thanks heaps for hanging around to help me get this!

Later on I checked my mail to find a letter from Bran Bronzebeard. Inside was my Reins of the Ironbound Proto-Drake! My 126th Mount on McTacky.

Some Dragon Slaying!

Ayelena and I needed Less Is More (25 Player). The problem was that we need to kill the 3 Dragons, which meant that no mount would drop off Sartharion.

However our Guildies are Awesome! Aioros, Azalpha, Exëcute, Poldra, Delehrium (Jinjersnaps). Exëcute brought along Torturedsoul. Navimie said she'd come, but before I could reply she went off and joined a PvP thing.

So we killed that instance and no mount dropped of course.

We'd move on to Malygos 25 for Achieves for the others (Speed Kill, Less than 23 people, kill people while on platform).

Then Onyxia 25 but failed to get any Achieves there (sorry I was the one to stand in the deep breath).

Glory to the Raider (10 player)

Navimie, Sevros, Azalpha, HK (on an alt) and Myself went into Nax (10) to do the The Arachnid Quarter, to get me the Achievement I needed for the meta!

Azalpha told everyone not to AoE for the fight with Grand Widow Faerlina like last time and I got the achievement with no problem!

Momma Said Knock You Out (10 player) and Glory of the Raider (10 player)! Woot!

Thanks Navimie, Sevros, Azalpha and HK!

Glory of the Raider (10 player)

Today myself, Exëcute, Aioros, Azalpha and Afranaisy went into Naxxramas (10 Player) to get achievements for Glory of the Raider (10 player).

First The Arachnid Quarter. We attacked Grand Widow Faerlina and somehow failed Momma Said Knock You Out (10 player). We pushed on and got Arachnophobia (10 player) for everyone and the Spiderwing was done.

We then went to The Construct Quarter that Exëcute kept calling the Plague Quarter, making Aioros go to the wrong spot. Eventually we all got to the same spot. Make Quick Werk of Him (10 player) done after Patchwerk fied within 3 minutes.

Grobbulus and Gluth fell with no effort then it was off to Thaddius. Subtraction (10 player) was simple enough since there were only five of us. Shocking! (10 player) need more planning since everyone was melee. Exëcute and Aioros stood out of the fight. Azalpha and Afranaisy meleed standing a different sides and I healed. Thaddius died in little time.

Then the real The Plague Quarter. Noth the Plaguebringer fight. Then for Heigan the Unclean we all stood up on the platform for The Safety Dance (10 player).

Then at the end of The Plague Quarter was Loatheb. We avoid AoE and Ret Aura and got Spore Loser in little time.

Then onto the Military Quarter! Smashed Instructor Razuvious with Aza tanking without bothering with the mind control. Waited around for the Gothik the Harvester fight to end.  Then we tried for And They Would All Go Down Together (10 player) but the last kill just took a moment too long.

Then there was the last place left. Frostwyrm Lair. On Sapphiron we did the fight we got The Hundred Club (10 player) for others. Then on Kel'Thuzad we killed 18 Abominations for Just Can't Get Enough (10 player). Since we killed all the boss with less then 10 people, we also got The Dedicated Few (10 player).

Then onto the Sartharion in The Obsidian Sanctum. Afranaisy left but we were joined by Roshii, Ròckhoof, and Guild Leader Fueghan. Leaving all 3 Drakes alive, we look out Sartharion. Fueghan won the Reins of the Black Drake. Earning Twilight Assist (10 player), Twilight Duo (10 player), The Twilight Zone (10 player) and Gonna Go When the Volcano Blows (10 player) for myself.

So in the end today I am now 15/16 for Glory of the Raider (10 player). I just need Momma Said Knock You Out (10 player) now.

Then I traveled onto Malygos 10 man with Exëcute, Aioros, Azalpha and Fueghan. They earnt
A Poke in the Eye (10 Player) for having less than 10 people, also You Don't have an Eternity (10 Player for defeating the Aspect of Magic in less than 6 Minutes.

After helping with Sougly's Dwarfageddon (10 player) group, it was onwards to join Navimie's Onyxia 25 Man. There were 16 of us for that. <McTacky takes a deep breath>.

Frostwolves: Azalpha, Execute, Faithless, Imwifher (Roshii), Imwifhim (Souglyy), Lushnek (HK), McTacky (me), Navimie, Sevros.

The Darkness Within: Dragonray, Lominari, Cynewulf, Calagendi

Others: Saintvache, Nipandtuck, & Druidelight

On the third attempt we got Onyxia Down, and 50 Whelps on Phase 2, no one hit by Deep Breath and within 5 minutes. I got more Four Achievements: Onyxia's Lair (10 player), Many Whelps! Handle It! (10 player), More Dots! (10 player), She Deep Breaths More (10 player).

Then The Darkness Within was going to Ruby Sanctum 10 man. Navimie, myself, Lushnek (HK), and Execute tagged along. Halion was dead on the first attempt.

Ulduar 25! (part 2)

Part 1 The raid from before was extended to get some more non-meta achievements!

Arvash tanking again. Bishop, Navimie, and I healing. Faithless, Lushnek (HK), Roshii, Sevros, and Souglyy on Damage.

Set Up Us the Bomb (25 player). What we to for Mimiron for this:

Phase 1: Don't stand on the mines
Phase 2: Don't stand in front of Mimiron during Rocket Strike
Phase 3: Don't get blown up by Bomb Bot! Range attack them.Still avoid Rocket Strike.
Phase 4: Avoid mines and Rocket Strike!

Standing in close lets you change your radius faster.

Shadowdodger: We failed this a few times. The trick was standing far away from the boss and have the people in vent yelling for you to run!

They're Coming Out of the Walls: Stand in clouds to cause nine of these to spawn, then AoE them down fast. We ended up with like 12 out. Burned them down.

Tried to get Drive Me Crazy (25 player) for the others but someone went insane seconds before Yogg-Saron died.
I Choose You, Stormcaller Brundir (25 player): This was a simple fight for us. We killed the little guy last.

Supermassive: We waited for some Living Constellations to appear then ran them into the Black Holes.

We did the 25-person run with 9 people but we made it! It was heaps of fun!

Nine PvP Achievements!

Today I joined Jinjersnaps (and Rogue alt Chatous), Grimoire, Parmenien, Arashikage. Did heaps of PvP. Heck I'll just show the nine achievements!
Tried to get Arathi Basin Assassin as well tonight. The all four of us and Shabadu moved around AB as a kill team to help me get this. Sadly was unable to get the 5 kills needed at Farm.
Things I learnt today:
●  There are speed boots in Twin Peaks.
●  To use Hand of Freedom more to get out of snares
●  That Twin Peaks has no achievement for capping 3 flags without dying like WSG.
●  That Glaive Grave is just for HKs, not Killing Blows.
●  The crybabies who like to say stupid things like "Horde Suck" and "Our Team Sucks Except Me" actually believe that drivel.
●  You get Conquest Points from winning a random battlegrounds. I thought you only got that once a day.
●  That as a Healer I somehow had to get a Killing Blow for Twin Peaks Perfection.
●  That Jinjersnaps, Grimoire, Parmenien, Arashikage and Shabadu  are more awesome that I first thought! Thanks for the huge ammont of help today!
